In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
