EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
